On Friday September 23 we held our long-awaited Microbiome Friday Kick-Off. This first seminar focused around the main theme “Viruses – the dark matter of the microbiome”.

The RPA’s own Gerlieke Veltkamp (FMG, UvA) kicked off the afternoon with her presentation “From danger to uncertainly: changing healthcare practices, everyday experiences, and temporalities in dealing with COVID-19 policies in family households”. Also one of the RPA’s PI’s Hilde Herrema (AUMC, UvA) presented “A translational approach to study bacteriophages in human cardiometabolic disease”. The presentations were concluded by our guest speaker Sana Garmaeva’s (UMCG, RUG) presentation on “Development of the gut bacteriome and virome during the first year of life”. The rest of the afternoon consisted of a “borrel” with all the present students, presenters and PI’s.

The Microbiome Fridays are a new initiative within the RPA-PMH that mainly focus on the PhD-students involved within the different work packages. The goal is to unite the students and to encourage them to work together, within disciplines/fields that might not directly seem to fit with their own research and therefore might create interesting collaborations.

We are fortunate to be able to use the beautiful IAS building every Friday for these afternoons. IAS is located in the centre of Amsterdam and is connected to one of the major buildings of the University of Amsterdam.

IAS is open to us every Friday from 12PM until 6PM. If you would like to come to IAS on one of the upcoming Friday afternoons, please sign up on the Microbe Friday event pages of your choice here. Please note that you can use the space for meetings, working together or studying. We will offer our next scheduled seminar at IAS on October, 21. The program for this next seminar will be shared soon!

Are you a PhD-student and do you want to sign up for the next event on October, 21? Please find more information here.
