Professor Wim Crielaard
Wim Crielaard is professor of Molecular Biology at the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA, the joint faculty of dentistry of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam).
Crielaard received his MSc and PhD degree in Molecular Microbiology in Groningen and joined the UvA in 1991, after a 2-year post-doc period in the UK. After 10 years of an assistant/associated professorship at the UvA-Science faculty he joined ACTA in 2003. During the past 15+ years, with his co-workers, he studied the complexity of oral microbiome communities, including biological signal transduction events involved in maintaining a healthy equilibrium or leading to dynamic changes in physiology, population- composition and hence (the prevention of) development of a pathogenic oral microbiome. Crielaard has been the co-inititator of 2 major Public Private Partnerships, sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and partnering with Mars-Wrigley, Philips Research, Cargill, GlaxoSmithKline and TNO. Both initatives focused on the interaction between the microbial ecosystem and the human host, the composition of the saliva and oral microbiota and the dynamic interactions between the oral ecosystem and their involvement in oral health. Multiple fields of technical expertise were integrated in these themes, including biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, dentistry, immunology and microbiology.
